St Nicolas 9th Guildford Visit Normandy!

Over the May Bank Holiday weekend, 16 scouts and 6 parents and leaders from St Nicolas 9th Guildford (the largest number from a single Group) with 98 scouts, explorers and leaders from Hampshire and Surrey headed off on a cycling expedition in Normandy (France). The event was very well organised and run by a team from Rotherfield District in Hampshire who have done the event for over 15 years. The weather, whilst a bit chilly, was superb. After a hard first day’s cycling the scouts were delighted to find themselves camping in the grounds of the spectacular Chateau de Maragny between Bayeaux and Caen. The event consisted of a treasure hunt by bicycle taking in a vast array of historical sites, many of which related to D-Day and the subsequent battles culminating with a visit to the famous Pegasus Bridge and the museum. The highlight was probably sitting in the sun enjoying mango ice-creams from the Compagnie des Glaces on the sea front at Arromanches looking at the remains of the Mulberry Harbour.

The various teams all covered around 90 miles over the weekend which given some of the scouts were 10 years old shows real determination. The party arrived back at 2nd Bentley Scout HQ at 11pm on Monday so there were some rather bleary eyes in school on Tuesday.

Thanks are due to “Pirate”, Stuart and the Rotherfield crew, and to Hilary, Austen, Ian, David, Damian and Charlie (HC) without whom we wouldn’t have taken part. The event is booked for 2018 and we intend to return then.
